TECUÁN MIRROR MASK – NATURAL LEATHER
Handmade Folk Art from Guerrero, Mexico
This contemporary take on the traditional Tecuán mask pays homage to one of the Nahua culture’s most iconic rituals: La Danza de los Tecuanes. Performed in Guerrero and other parts of southern Mexico, the dance tells the story of a fierce jaguar that terrorizes villagers—eating livestock and people alike—until hunters rise up to reclaim harmony.
Rooted in myth and agricultural symbolism, the dance represents the eternal tension between humankind and nature, and is performed to protect crops and summon the rains.
This particular version of the Tecuán mask reimagines the traditional with a minimalist sensibility—natural leather, horsehair, and mirrored eyes replacing vibrant paint with earthy reverence. Both wild and elegant, it makes a powerful sculptural statement on a shelf, pedestal, or bookcase.
Approximate dimensions: 7" w x 7" d x 9.5" h
Material: Leather, horsehair, mirror
Handmade in Guerrero, Mexico
Please note: Each mask is handmade and one of a kind. Slight variations in features and materials are part of its artistry and spirit.
